The Remarkable Concept of the First Pancake

You are here: Home / Opinions & Reviews / The Remarkable Concept of the First Pancake

Originally posted: April 12, 2022

Even after years of developing skill and experience, the first pancake poured on any given day rarely reaches the perfection of subsequent pancakes. This phenomenon of pancakes is the basis for the concept of the first pancake.

The First Pancake concept refers to doing or making something new for the first time. The first pancake is an inspirational idea to encourage creativity to flourish.

Why a Pancake?

Every pancake, from basic to exotic is wonderful and unique.

Pancakes are these perfect golden jewels of goodness that can be as large as a plate or smaller than a coin, hot or cold, thick or paper thin, alone or part of a larger ensemble, dessert, starter or main meal. There are endless possibilities for embellishments for all kinds of batter ingredients and fruit additives.

A pancake reminds us of home, family, vacation days, weekends and leisurely pursuits. They offer warmth, sweetness and sustenance. Pancakes may have been prepared and eaten as long ago as 30,000 years based on recent research. Pancakes have been a part of our history as humans for countless millennia across countless cultures and may have been, I suggest, our earliest creative project.

In any field of human creative endeavour, first pancakes are small things that while beautiful in their own right, can start up a chain reaction. First pancakes provide a creative starting point for further development, reflection and even collaboration – specifically because you know you will make them again and again. We need to identify first pancakes to remind us to start our creative engine.

Embrace First Pancakes – Wherever You Find Them.

Regardless of your type or range of skill, you will nearly always find first pancakes.

Making a new pattern? It’s a first pancake.

Making a new dessert? It’s a first pancake.

Preparing for a job interview? It’s a first pancake.

Buying a new car? It’s a first pancake.

Going for a new spring walk? It’s a first pancake.

First pancakes are the start of something (anything, everything) and are unstoppable. They can be endearing, funny, unique and sometimes even a little sad. But they are all wonderful opportunities to stop and reflect for a moment so they can be to be examined, evaluated, praised, selected and embraced.

Creative humans see possibilities in all stages of development. We think, “You know, next time I could…”. The creative person wants to augment, build upon and grow. We are additionalists.

First Pancakes are an important and essential part of the creative process and, dare I say it, the human condition. I find first pancakes nearly daily now. It doesn’t give me permission to fail, but a reminder to envision a masterpiece.

We are creatives and we embrace our first pancakes. Use #firstpancake to share your first pancake finds and where they took you!

[…] Anyway, I attached it with a mattress stitch, but it still looked wonky. This is obviously my pancake attempt. I have since discovered that I had to stretch the collar out a bit and attach right down to where […]
