I need a pincushion.

My Pincushion

For nearly all my pinning requirements, I use those magical little clips. But, every time I do reach for my pins, the whole top of the pincushion comes off. I needed something functional – like now.

There are some areas, like inside seams, that only pins will do. Also, rather than putting away my favourite hand-sewing needle, I plunk it down in the middle of the cushion too. So, once again I reached for a pin, and the whole top of the cheap pincushion came along with it. It was time to take 5 minutes to make a simple pin cushion.

You know, it is almost kind of weird how many pincushion tutorials there are on YouTube®. For the first time, I raided my scraps bin (I knew I’d use them!) and found the cute clover leaf cotton print I used to make a midwife’s scale for my son’s partner. I have a ton of these little jars from my Chef’s Plate orders so I selected one of the taller ones for the job.

First, I measured the lid to cut out the material and then spent an hour looking for my compass from my little kit!  Then to find the glue gun and get it heated up.  Of course it was out of glue. Anyway, I sewed around the edges of the circle to gather it up to fit the lid.  Finally, I found some cotton balls from my make-up drawer to stuff the top.  Not very sophisticated, but all done.  Cute eh?

I like it, but it is not really that practical. The cushion is not thick enough, so I can’t push the pins in very far and they seem wobbly. I’ll keep trying.
