Halloween 2013

UPDATE 2022:

I was looking at this older post, and I noticed that our halloween costumes in 2013 were not only exceedingly ill-fitting and uncomfortable, they were also troublesome in terms of cultural appropriation. Therefore, I made the decision to remove images related to our costumes for this year. Strange how I didn’t make any connection at the time, but from the perspective of today, it was immediately obvious to me. I feel both pleased that I have learned and evolved, but also disappointed in my younger self.

Hope the post still works and of course many others had great costumes.

It is always a difficult (but rewarding) process to come up with our coordinated couple Halloween costumes for the Annual Halloween Bash™ at my brother and sister-in-law’s house. Usually, once we decide on the concept and run with it, it is great and we just have tons of fun fine-tuning the look. But this year, our off-the-rack costume was not one of our better ideas.

First, it was not, not, not comfortable wearing a wig all night at all. Who knew?  I just wanted to tear the thing off and scratch (which of course I did eventually with the resulting satisfyingly seasonal screams at my hair). Our makeup was also so heavy and greasy feeling. I used one of the cheap products for kids make-up and it didn’t go on well, and then smeared on everything. It gets quite warm in the house with so many people – even though a fair number of guests end up gathering outside as well depending on the autumn weather.  Hub, of course, had fun and enjoyed socializing and having a beer or 12. He didn’t seem to care or notice smeared makeup.  Again, as designated driver, I refrained completely, but enjoyed sipping on my coffee all night.

On another note, the food (it is potluck) was incredible this year. Audrey made devilled eggs with the yoke coloured green with eyeballs and veins. Wonderful.

Couple’s Halloween costumes

Bride & Groom

My sister-in-law and brother’s costumes were aaaaamazing!  They did a reverse bride and groom.  She was in a full tuxedo and he had the most perfect wedding dress with full make-up including fake eyelashes. His beard made the look very disconcerting and off kilter, but then of course that is the point. I really think he had a ton of fun with all the swishing and fluttering of eyelashes. It was hilarious as usual.

Really think it is time to plan ahead for next year – wait a minute, didn’t I say that last year too?
