Spring Cleaning 2018

Kitchen Floor - Before
Kitchen Floor – Before

Spring Cleaning – Project 1. Yep, time to take on a deep cleaning project to get ready for summer. First up: kitchen tiles.  Funny how I start to get motivated on tedious cleaning tasks at the change of the seasons.

Where I live here in Canada, we have four distinct seasons. I lived in England for a few years and the seasons seemed to just blend into each other. But if you suddenly arrived here in my home town, you would have no trouble discerning what season you were in!

So, whether it is the prospect of Spring or just finally beginning to shed the forever-cold 2018, I decided to tackle the tile grout in the kitchen.

Tiles

I have a light coloured grout between the tiles which tends to get quite dark over time especially in the high traffic areas or near the counter by the coffee maker.  They darken slowly over time, so I don’t notice too much until it is quite dark.

Kitchen floor - before

About once a year, I soak the floor and tiles with some undiluted cleaning liquid for about 20 minutes. Then out comes the scrubby brush and a lot of elbow grease. I do it in sections over a few days because it can be quite hard on the arms and knees.

Well, I came upon this scrubby brush attachment for a drill of all things – just put on the brush rather than the drill bit.  It was on amazon and a reasonable price so I decided to go for it.  The bristles are quite stiff which I need for this job.

Kitchen tiles - after

It went right on the drill with no problem.  It worked very nicely.  I am very pleased with the results and it was so much faster and easier.

Since I had gained all that time, I also pulled out the oven to clean the floor there too.  Feels so fresh.

Well done me!
