Devon Zipper Pouch

Okay, so right out of the gate, I’m gonna say I am a huge fan of the Devon Zipper Pouch by Svetlana Sotak. It is one of my all-time favourite things to make and use. It is my everyday purse which I made with a cross-body strap. I’m not sure how many I’ve made, at least 20 probably more, but that is when I started counting.

The only issue I have is that the recommended dimensions for cutting seem to be a bit off and I ended up creating my own pattern pieces for the size I like the best. It was one of my first bag makes and I really notice that the later versions are so much better. The pattern doesn’t actually have pattern pieces – it is just lists the dimensions. I understand that some people aren’t crazy about that, but I usually make my own pattern pieces out of cardboard anyway so I was fine with that.

My first “everyday” Devon

One of the great things about the Devon is that it is very popular so there are a ton of inspiration photos around the web and also many YouTube tutorials and sew-along videos. The designer herself has even put out an excellent instructional video.

I usually use faux leather for the side panels and top piece and interface all the cotton pieces. I also interface the front panel with 808 craft fuse for additional stability.

The size is just perfect for all the necessary stuff. I can put in my phone, wallet, pen and other essentials. It nestles nicely on my hip, even when I’m driving. The front panel is a perfect size for a fussy cut – that is centering on the part of the fabric that you want to accentuate.

My lastest “everyday” devon made with canvas fabric from The Fabric Snob

With the back I will sometimes use more of the front panel or match the top and sides of the front.

This fabric is a light canvas called Ocean Beauties from The Fabric Snob. OMG! I love this fabric and couldn’t wait to use it. Such a lovely colour and the whales and dolphins and wonderful. I also bought the same pattern in a knit fabric (which is heavenly btw). I just don’t know what to make with it yet.

So, in total, a great pattern that will get you a great useful bag of perfect proportions. Thumbs up! For more devons, have a look at my Devon Gallery!
