I love Patterns for Pirates ! The next pattern I decided to use is actually a free one so it doesn’t get better than that. Son doesn’t have many needs or wants, but I traditionally try to re-stock his PJ’s and socks in his Christmas stocking.
I found this rather nice thick flannel fabric at my local Fabricland. It is really nice soft and thick and on top of that has some rather lovely patterns and rich colours. I used this same fabric from Fabricland in a different pattern for Hub’s Finlayson Sweater. Son is currently living in British Columbia finishing up a post-graduate course at UBC, but he managed to come home to Ontario for a holiday visit with his fiancé and us.
This was the first time downloading and cutting up this pattern, but whoa – easy, fast and great fit. The only hack I made was to add a little back pocket since I always love a pocket myself. I made the legs kinda long, but they were considered satisfactory and he seemed to like them.
The Sewing
So, a very simple sew with one pattern piece – yup, just one! Still, it was new to me to add an elastic but all went well. I tried using the coverstitch machine, but the thread broke every time – may be tension, may be thread or may be that I had one needle on elastic and one on fabric. I will try to investigate further in the next few projects. In the end I decided to serge the elastic (without cutting it) to the raw edge, and then turned, folded over and zig-zag stitched on the bottom. Another first which will require more practice.
I did get to use the coverstitch for the bottom hem on the legs and it was gorgeous as expected! The coverstitch is such a nice looking stitch for finishing!
Also made him a slouchy beanie in matching material, but apparently he thought it did not suit his style. Still, a great pattern which I will likely make again once I find another needful head.
On a side note, I ordered some fabric from GirlCharlee on December 29, 2017 and the expected delivery date accordingly to the courier tracking number is January 15, 2018. Now, I get that it is the Christmas season so that likely accounts for the long delivery time. I have since seen some rather disappointing reviews on their fabric though (timing!), so I just hope what I ordered is okay. I ordered Hacci, French Terry, Cotton Jersey and Cotton Spandex to make some more PJ’s and other items from P4P . Fingers crossed!
