Halloween Loot Bag for Kiddos

Matching loot bag? Oh yes! lol. So a request was put in for a “purse” to match the unicorn to hold and collect Halloween loot. Yup, I can do that! Coming right up.

I love the unbelievably free pattern from Swoon called the “Ethel Tote”. Warning though: It does take a lot interfacing including foam interfacing, fusible stabilizer (Like Peltex 71F) and about 3 yards 20” wide fusible woven interfacing (such as SF101). I had all those on hand including just enough foam to complete the two bags. So, off to the races.

I decided to go with the Trick-or-treating-Chic style adding matchy-matchy vibes and shiny accessories.

I set out to match the two costumes I made this year: a lion and a unicorn. My thought was that they should be general enough for use in the next few years too. The costumes are basic and roomy so they can also be reused in the future by themselves or for their younger siblings.

Fuzzy Lion Bag

So, first up the fuzzy fur loot bag. I miscalculated the amount of brown fleece I needed and have rather a lot left over. Wasn’t sure how it would work, but I set to with the fleece for the outer layers and some lovely thick neon orange florescent waterproof fabric I have in my stack for the lining. (I believe I got it from Paccana a few years ago.). I also found some shiny trim and a reflective happy face for decoration. I sewed the trim onto some cotton webbing for the handles. So the main features were reflective handles, waterproof lining (for easy cleaning), back pockets for storing special items and a reflective decal on front. One down, one to go.

Unicorn Loot Bag

This loot bag was very fun to make. I cut it out as the same time as the fuzzy lion one so it was quick to whip up. The cotton was a very sturdy and thick bubble gum coloured cotton. After interfacing and foam, it had an even greater texture. The rainbow decal jumped out at me at the store and I knew she would love that! The webbing I used was almost like it was jewelled but being reflective was the most important property to me. Finally, the waterproof lining I used was a thin purple denier fabric also in my stash from Paccana. I think it was the lowest denier because it was quite thin. I fused some light interfacing to it and was much better.
